Common Concerns

No. AA is not affiliated with any religious denomination, treatment facility, political group, or outside organization. AA cooperates with many, but it is not controlled by or allied with any of them.

AA is independent. It is not part of any church, treatment center, hospital, court, political group, or outside organization. AA meetings may be held in churches, community centers, treatment facilities, or other rented spaces, but that does not mean AA is affiliated with those places. AA may cooperate with professionals, courts, hospitals, clergy, or treatment programs when asked, but it does not endorse, oppose, or belong to outside organizations. This independence helps AA stay focused on one primary purpose: carrying its message to the alcoholic who still suffers. If you were referred to AA by a court, doctor, treatment center, friend, or family member, you are still free to explore AA for yourself. Find a meeting at /meetings/.
