Common Concerns
No. You do not have to quit before coming, and you do not have to promise "forever." Many people come to AA one day at a time, starting with just today.
You do not have to have already quit drinking before you attend AA. You also do not have to make a lifetime promise before walking into a meeting. For many newcomers, the idea of quitting forever feels overwhelming. AA members often talk about taking recovery "one day at a time." That means focusing on today instead of trying to solve the rest of your life all at once. You can come to a meeting even if you are still unsure, still afraid, or still drinking. You will meet people who once felt the same way and found help. Find a meeting at /meetings/ or call San Fernando Valley Area of Alcoholics Anonymous at 818-988-3001.
